About Chua
Chua Enlai was born in Singapore and grew up in New Zealand. He is an award-winning actor and host known for his dramatic and comedic work across theatre, television, and film.
Most recently seen in the Mediacorp Channel 5 drama series Mixed Signals - an adaptation of the play by Michael Chiang, other recent programmes include Mediacorp Channel 8’s dialect variety show Happy Go Lucky, Becoming Human - Channel NewsAsia’s documentary on artificial intelligence and OKTO’s Museum Mysteries. He’s also known for his work on nine seasons of the International Emmy-nominated The Noose, for which he’s won the Asian Television Award for Best Comedy Performance in 2010 and 2013. Featuring his well-loved characters Jacques Ooi, BB See and Pornsak Sukhumvit, the show is screened on terrestrial television channel Mediacorp Channel 5, it’s digital VoD service MeWatch, as well as Comedy Central Asia. It has just completed its special edition season The Noose Gets Smart in 2020.
Other acting credits on television include Say the Word, Random Island, Silver Lining, Sayang Sayang, Parental Guidance, My Sassy Neighbour and Daddy’s Girls.
As a host, Enlai has fronted these talk shows - The 5 Show and later, Not The 5 Show - a ‘live’ daily and weekly programme that features topical stories and studio guests who matter to the everyday Singaporean.
Live television hosting credits include the annual President’s Star Charity, National Day Parade and the New Year’s Eve Countdown shows. Variety/Info-Ed programmes include Same But Different, Heartland Getaways, Global Picnic and Look Who’s Leading on Channel 5, and his early work on Kids Central, such as Jobs for Juniors, Science Guy P.I. and Hobby TV.
2013 saw Enlai’s first foray into Chines—language programmes with Happy Go Lucky (欢喜没烦恼), Laughing Out Loud (笑笑没烦恼), I’m In Charge (小子当家) and Say It (好好说慢慢讲), the highest-rating variety programme in Singapore that year. Other credits include WAH Singapore, Scrum and The Will.
For his work on the small screen, Enlai was named Elle Magazine’s Actor of the Year in 2008.
Enlai has worked on over 50 theatre productions with groups such as W!ld Rice, Dream Academy, Theatreworks, The Necessary Stage, SRT, Toy Factory and Spell #7 in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau and Australia.
Some of the highlights include Michael Chiang’s Private Parts, Monkey Goes West (2014 & 2016), The Importance of Being Earnest (2020, 2014, 2013 & 2009), Ah Boys To Men: The Musical, Army Daze (2013 & 2012), Happy Ever Laughter, Cinderel-Lah! (2010 & 2003), Boom, Titoudao, Fundamentally Happy, Connect the Dots (HongKong), Separation 40, Bent, Plunge, Shakespeare’s R+J, Shopping & F***ing, Lovepuke, Meena and Me and Snakeskin. Enlai has received seven acting nominations at the Life! Theatre Awards and has won twice - Best Actor for Shopping & F***ing and Best Supporting Actor for The Importance of Being Earnest.
His feature film credits include Wayang Boy, Judgement Day, The Ghosts Must Be Crazyand Already Famous, as well as cameos in Everybody’s Business, Taxi! Taxi! and Greedy Ghost.
It is little wonder why Enlai has become one of the most-watched faces on TV. His popularity, topped with a warm and vibrant personality, and his distinct and hearty laugh, has also made him the choice host for numerous roadshows, functions and gala dinners.
